Abstract

MURDER $1,000 Reward About 11.25 P. M., June 28, 1902, Austin J. Crowe was killed in his place of business by four unknown men. Austin J. Crowe conducted a grocery and saloon at the corner of Chicago and Fulton streets, this City, and on the evening of June 28th had closed his grocery and gone into his saloon for the purpose of closing his day's business. Four men, unknown, entered the saloon and ordered drinks, which were furnished by Crowe. From a tenant occupying rooms over Crowe's saloon, it is learned a dispute occurred as to the payment for the drinks. Crowe, who was a courageous and athletic man, and never known to have had trouble in his saloon, ordered the men to leave his place, and undoubtedly endeavored to eject the meu from his saloon. Several shots were fired; three of the men escaped from the saloon through the door, the fourth man by jumping through the window carrying glass and sash with him. A short time previous to the murder of Crowe four strangers were seen in another saloon in the immediate vicinity of Crowe's place, and it is supposed they are the four men who murdered Crowe. One description of the four men is as follows: All smooth faces, twenty-five to twenty-eight years old; all wore dark clothing; fairly well dressed. Two wore derby hats and two soft slouch hats, one of which may be a Fedora. Two men about five feet ten inches tall, and two about five feet six inches tall; all medium build. Another description gives one of the men as being twenty-seven years old, five feet seven inches in height, 155 to 160 pounds, smooth face, wore brown coat and slouch hat dented in the center; no collar; another of the men ·was twenty-eight years old, about 155 pounds, smooth face; another twenty-eight years old, about 155 pounds, black clothes, black slouch hat; fourth man no clear description. Still another description of the four men seen in the saloon neat· the scene of the murder is as follows: All between twenty and twenty-five years old, smooth faces; one has a very slim, paleface, the youngest one a tough looking face, resembles a pugilist; three of them were fairly well dressed in dark clothes; two wore Derby hats, the other a soft hat and the fourth man a p;ray checked coat and vest, somewhat shiny or greasy, black pants and black soft hat which had four dents in it. The Common Council of the City of Buffalo in their regular sessions June 30th and July 3d,1902, adopted a resolution requesting the Mayor to offer a reward of $1,000 for the arrest and conviction of the murderers. ln compliance with the resolution of the Common Council of the City of Buffalo, I hereby offer a reward of $1,000 for the identification, arrest and conviction of the murderers of Austin J.
